Low-Power Optical Wireless Communication Near-Field Transceiver

Whitepaper #17: Low-Power Optical Wireless Communication Near-Field Transceiver

Authors: Philipp Meißner, Dr. René Kirrbach, Lorenz Reuschel (Fraunhofer IPMS)

Wireless connectivity enables flexible operation of mobile devices and sensor systems. Low-power optical wireless communication (LP-OWC) complements radio frequency (RF) technologies with energy-efficient, reliable, and spatially confined links that reduce interference and spectrum congestion. This article introduces LP-OWC, its properties, implementation, and potential applications, and compares it with established RF technologies such as near field communication (NFC) and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).
