Involvement in European pilot lines

Pilot lines as the key to technological sovereignty

Fraunhofer IPMS is actively involved in European pilot lines to accelerate technology transfer from research to industrial application. Close cooperation with partners from science and industry creates manufacturing environments in which innovative technologies can be validated, scaled, and transformed into marketable solutions. Fraunhofer IPMS thus makes a significant contribution to establishing a competitive European value chain for microelectronics and quantum technologies.

Our focus is on microelectronics, quantum technologies, MEMS, and system integration. With its participation in APECS, FAMES, SUPREME, and Qu-Pilot, Fraunhofer IPMS supports the development of industrially scalable manufacturing capacities throughout Europe.

From research to application – your access to pilot lines

Thanks to Fraunhofer IPMS's involvement in European pilot lines, companies and research institutions benefit from direct access to innovative process platforms, expertise, and infrastructure. We support our partners from the initial design through process development to prototype production.

Pilot lines in microelectronics

In the field of microelectronics, Fraunhofer IPMS is involved in several European pilot lines that support the transition of research results into production. Our contributions include MEMS- and CMOS-based technologies, novel integration methods, and increasing energy efficiency through novel materials.

APECS

APECS is a pan-European pilot line for establishing groundbreaking infrastructure for heterogeneous integration and advanced packaging.

As part of APECS, Fraunhofer IPMS is developing innovative chiplet architectures and integration technologies. The focus is on 3D/2.5D wafer-level integration, QMI, functional interposers, secure circuit designs, and reliability analyses.

FAMES

FAMES develops low-power chips for digital, analog, and high-frequency technologies.

Fraunhofer IPMS offers a unique environment for the development, integration, and characterization of novel memory materials and stacks on 300 mm wafers. We focus on ferroelectric memory and compute-in-memory (CiM) accelerators.

PREVAIL

PREVAIL is creating a technological platform for prototypes of advanced neuromorphic chips for edge AI applications.

Fraunhofer IPMS is contributing its advanced 300 mm manufacturing, design, and testing capabilities. The aim is to create a “hardware for edge AI” platform for 300 mm technology.

Pilot lines in quantum technologies

Fraunhofer IPMS is a partner in European pilot lines for quantum technologies, where key components and manufacturing processes for quantum computers are being developed. We apply our expertise in 300 mm manufacturing processes to the production of qubits, their electronic interfacing, and the development of cryoelectronic processes. In this way, we are making a decisive contribution to establishing a competitive European value chain for quantum chips and quantum components.

SUPREME

SUPREME is an important European pilot line for the industrialization of superconducting quantum chip manufacturing.

Fraunhofer IPMS contributes its expertise in the areas of industrial-scale manufacturing of superconducting components and the development of innovative material solutions.

Qu-Pilot

The Qu-Pilot pilot line aims to develop and make accessible the first European manufacturing capacities for quantum technologies.

Fraunhofer IPMS is using its expertise in CMOS 300 mm manufacturing to improve semiconductor and superconductor platforms. Focus: deposition, nanostructuring, electrical characterization, optimized metallization, and BeoL modules for superconducting qubits.

SPINS

Semiconducting Pilot Line for Industrial quantum NanoSystems

Fraunhofer IPMS is key to SPINS for high-resolution structuring of qubit and processor elements, handling all lithography beyond optical limits to ensure precise, reproducible patterns essential for scalable Si/SiGe quantum chips.
