From Quantum Foundry to Application – Quantum Technologies for the Future
Fraunhofer IPMS conducts research in quantum technologies, covering quantum computing, quantum communication, and quantum sensing and metrology. The focus is on semiconductor-based approaches that enable the development of scalable quantum hardware and enabling technologies for industrial and societal applications, bridging the gap between fundamental research and application-oriented systems.
A key element is the Quantum Foundry at Fraunhofer IPMS, where micro- and nanotechnology is combined with advanced semiconductor process development. This infrastructure enables the fabrication, integration, and scaling of quantum devices from lab to fab, with a strong emphasis on reproducibility and transferability of processes.
In quantum computing, Fraunhofer IPMS develops enabling technologies for scalable quantum processors across different qubit platforms, supported by advanced 200 mm and 300 mm semiconductor process capabilities. In quantum communication, the focus lies on secure information transfer based on quantum states and photonic integration technologies, targeting scalable and manufacturable system components. Quantum sensing and metrology addresses high-precision measurement systems based on quantum effects, with an emphasis on miniaturized and semiconductor-compatible solutions for future applications.
Through European quantum pilot line initiatives, Fraunhofer IPMS provides access to semiconductor infrastructure, cleanroom technologies, and process expertise. This supports close collaboration with industry and research partners, enabling the co-development, validation, and scaling of quantum technologies toward industrial deployment and integration into future value chains.
