Fraunhofer IPMS develops spectroscopy systems and components for miniaturized chemical analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and optical sensing applications. Its portfolio includes MEMS-based ion mobility spectrometers, compact grating spectrometers, FTIR scan engines, and tunable quantum cascade lasers.
MEMS-based ion mobility spectrometers integrate ion filters and detectors on silicon chips, enabling the direct detection of ionizable substances in air. These systems support portable applications in environmental monitoring, biomedical analysis, and volatile organic compound (VOC) detection. Compact grating spectrometers combine MEMS technology with point detectors and can be customized for specific spectral ranges in the near-infrared (NIR), ultraviolet (UV), or visible (VIS) spectrum. For Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Fraunhofer IPMS develops scan engines featuring translational MEMS mirrors and optimized optical designs for robust, high-speed, and compact measurement systems. Tunable quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) complement the portfolio by providing rapid wavelength tuning in the mid-infrared range.
Key application areas include point-of-use chemical analysis, hazardous substance detection, breath gas analysis, and industrial process monitoring. The technologies are also applied in food safety, medical diagnostics, and environmental monitoring.
