Gigabit Quantum Random Number Generator (QRNG) – Randomness in the Age of Quantum Technology

Whitepaper #15: Gigabit Quantum Random Number Generator (QRNG) – Randomness in the Age of Quantum Technology

Fraunhofer IPMS

Random numbers form the foundation for cryptographic applications of all kinds. In computers, these are generated either using physical processes such as thermal noise or through algorithmic calculations. Both approaches reach their limits in the age of quantum technologies.

Randomness Becomes a Critical Resource

Almost every cryptographic procedure – key generation, initialization vectors, digital signatures – stands or falls with the quality of its random numbers. If these are predictable or correlated, security collapses regardless of the strength of the algorithm. At the same time, demand is rising rapidly: cloud services, hardware security modules, and quantum communication require entropy on the Gigabit scale. Randomness thus transforms from an implicitly assumed quantity to a scarce, security-critical resource.
