RFID Sensor Systems

Fraunhofer IPMS develops wireless RFID sensor systems. Comprehensive services range from ASIC development to system integration and cloud connection.

What are RFID sensor systems?

The hardware of an wireless sensor network basing on RFID consists of a transponder (tag) and a reading device (reader). Combining RFID transponder circuits with integrated or external sensors, RFID sensors wirelessly identify and read sensor values as well as allow for the integration of actuators. For passive, battery-free RFID sensors, the energy required for measurement and transmission is taken from the electromagnetic field of the reader.  A complete RFID system includes the middleware which transfers communication from the transponder to higher-level systems.

Compared to conventional wireless sensor networks and wired sensor systems, passive RFID sensor systems offer many advantages:

  • Cable-free
  • Battery-free
  • Maintenance-free
  • Sensors for harsh environmental conditions

How to integrate RFID sensors in existing systems?

Fraunhofer IPMS has developed OPC UA middleware for RFID sensor systems, which offers a manufacturer-independent interface for RFID hardware components to facilitate uncomplicated system integration. This permits the rapid integration of RFID sensors and actuators into already existing environments.

Fraunhofer IPMS offers consulting and development services for customer-specific RFID sensor systems to include:

  • ASIC development
  • Antenna design
  • Sensor integration
  • Tag development
  • System integration
  • Remote access
  • Data analysis
  • Cloud integration
